Well, this blog would not be complete without adding my personal experiences and telling you all a little bit about me.

I’m not quite like your traditional aspiring pilot for the RCAF. As a little kid I never saw myself as a pilot in the forces or even to be flying at all. I wanted to be an architect or fire fighter, and I must admit, I sometimes even dreamt of being a superhero. But a pilot? That came at a slightly later age. My mother, little brother (who is 4 years younger than myself) and I moved to Canada shortly after 9/11 to begin a life more fulfilling and my mother wanted to raise us in a country where my brother and I were less likely to get into too much trouble.

We did find some initial hardships in our move to Canada – my mother wasn’t able to find work right away, my brother and I weren’t allowed to attend elementary school for two years and we found ourselves moving around the metro Vancouver area of BC a few times within as many years. Luckily the schooling system in Germany was a bit more advanced and once we became permanent residents of Canada, my brother and I were able to eventually meet and surpass our grade’s requirements and both ended up skipping a grade – back then I didn’t quite realize how significantly awesome it was to have two years off and still get ahead!

My passion to be a pilot was sparked:

I remember going to the Abbotsford Air show in BC one year, being very intrigued by the many planes and became fascinated with the incredible power and yet gentleness that came with flight.

As we walked around checking out the planes, we came across these kids standing in sharp looking military uniforms handing out pamphlets to what they called “the best youth program in Canada.” It was the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program, and I was told that I too could be a pilot in the program by the ripe young age of 16! (I was already 13 by then) Without much hurry I was signed up and began parading with the 746 Lightning Hawk Squadron within about a month. The program was great, and really got me interested in flying, because I was a bit older at the time that I joined, I knew I had to work hard. So I attended everything I could and joined everything offered to me. This included the rifle team, drill team, effective speaking team and attended all possible leadership, aviation days, and volunteer days I could! All of this paid off and at the age of 16, I was awarded the scholarship to attend the Glider pilot course, followed by the private pilot scholarship course when I was 17. They were and remain some of the greatest, most proudest achievements of my life, I met many great people (several of whom now fly for the Air Force) and built truly lasting relationships. After these courses, I remember thinking that I wanted to be a pilot for the air force, above all!

  1. Hello,

I found your blog really helpful, and I hope you can answer a question for me.

I am color weak, during my medical with the CF interview, I failed the first type of color test (the one with numbers made of pieces of different colors), but was able to pass the alternative one where you arrange colors base on their hue.

I was able to get on the competitive list for the trade I have selected but then found out it was full. So I added a couple of more trade one of them is pilot since it is in demend.

Would me color weakness be acceptable for the pilot trade?

Looking forward for you reply (hope this actually gets to you)

  2. Hey man nice blog! I just passed my CFAST last week. Your experience was identical to mine. Checked out the museum, tower tour was neat (I had nicer weather), and even waiting for the results. Nerve-racking!! I’m already a CAF member so my medical isn’t for another few weeks. Did you do your flight training yet?

  3. Hello, do you guys know what the salary is while training to be an RCAF pilot? Do they give experienced airline pilots some credit for flying hours in basic flying ? Is there a lot of wait time between the courses? Please email me if possible, thanks. Captain S. Flaretoland@gmail.com

  4. Hey man, thanks a bunch for this blog, was really useful during my application process!

    Couple quick questions for you if you ever roam back on this page;
-How would you describe Phase 1 at Portage in term of difficulty compared to the other phases?

-What was the estimated fail rate of your year at phase 1? I heard its a bit less now since the new computer based selection tests.

-What would you say are the big determinants for people that failed? Lack of skills, discipline, preparation?

Thanks a ton again and really cool to follow your story.

  5. Hi Anthony!! THanks for the information shared, very insightful. IM waiting for my BMQ and wanted to know the situation on wait times on Phase I and PhaseII. Heard that it might be years until you are advanced. Until then, what do you really do? DOes your rank go up with the time you are waiting or you are on hold? What is the forecast for the training wait time in the future, anybody shared? THanks in advance for your reply

    • Hi there,

There are some extra wait times right now primRily due to the backups that covid caused in the training system. Training schools are ramling up instructor capacity though in order to attempt to get through the current backlog in students. I have actually been posted back to Moose Jaw myself in order to train students now as well! So maybe I’ll see you here some day!

As for rank, things have changed a bit but you’ll remain a 2Lt until the time you get your wings. At which time you’ll be promoted to Lt. I believe you’ll be receiving backpay for the time that you were actually eligible to be a Lt.

      All the best on BMOQ!

  6. Hello there! Your blog posts were a huge help throughout my application process! Finished BMOQ in November and am now posted in Cold Lake awaiting Phase 2 flight training (bypassed Phase 1). Looking forward to your updates! Things seem to be picking up pace nowadays, and with so many new aircraft coming in the next few years (including trainers) it is an exciting time to be a pilot in the RCAF!
